About Us
The purpose of the UCSD Student Foundation is to introduce students to philanthropic enterprises and concepts and the workings of educational foundations. The student foundation is modeled after foundations at other universities to be an organization run by students, supported by students, and for the benefit of students.
In 1999, the student foundation was established when UCSD graduate Marc, '79, and Patricia, '83 Brutten donated $100,000 as seed money. The foundation mirrors the UCSD Foundation, a group of 50 highly successful and prominent, but diverse, people who are chosen to manage the University's endowment fund of over $350 million. The Trustees of the main foundation provide counsel and guidance to the student trustees.
The UCSD Student Foundation is the first among the University of California System. The organization provides students with the unique opportunity to become fully involved with the administration of the university. Student Trustees learn first hand what it takes to run a foundation, the importance of philanthropy to the student community, and the realities of investing and fundraising.
